Empowering King County Residents
Property ownership represents years of hard work, sacrifice, and investment in our communities. Yet for many residents, property taxation and assessments have become increasingly difficult to understand and even more difficult to challenge.
I believe taxpayers deserve a system that is transparent, accountable, understandable, and worthy of public trust. My campaign is centered on empowering King County residents through greater access to information, meaningful due process, consistent application of standards, and an Assessor’s Office that is responsive to the people it serves.
Government should be judged by results, not intentions. When systems are no longer producing fair, understandable, and trusted outcomes, we should be willing to acknowledge shortcomings and work toward meaningful improvements.
Transparency & Open Books Government
Government works best when the public can easily understand how decisions are made and where public resources are being utilized. Too often, government information is difficult to locate, overly complicated, or only available to those who know exactly where to look and how to ask for it.
I believe the Assessor’s Office should operate with an open-books philosophy. Property owners should have easy access to information regarding assessments, valuation methodologies, exemption programs, appeal processes, and the data used to help determine assessed values. Taxpayers should not have to navigate unnecessary barriers simply to understand how their property was valued or how decisions affecting them were made.
Transparency builds trust, encourages accountability, and empowers residents to become informed participants in their own government. An informed public is essential to good government, and I believe taxpayers deserve an Assessor’s Office that is accessible, understandable, and committed to openness in both its information and its actions.
Accountability & Fiduciary Responsibility
Every tax dollar represents time, labor, and resources earned by the people of King County. Government should never lose sight of the fact that it is entrusted with resources that belong to the public, and with that trust comes a duty to act responsibly, transparently, and accountably.
I believe government agencies should be able to explain not only what decisions are being made, but also why those decisions are being made and what outcomes they are intended to achieve. Good intentions alone are not enough. Public confidence is built when government actions are measurable, understandable, and capable of withstanding public scrutiny.
The Assessor’s Office should operate with a mindset of stewardship and service to the public. Taxpayers deserve an office that is responsive, willing to answer difficult questions, open to evaluating its own processes, and committed to continually improving how it serves the people of King County.
Accountability is not about assigning blame. It is about building trust through openness, responsibility, and a willingness to continually evaluate whether government systems are producing fair, understandable, and effective results.
Improving Public Access to Information
Government information should not require specialized knowledge to locate, understand, or use. Property owners should be able to easily access information regarding their assessments, valuation methodologies, exemption programs, appeal rights, and the processes that directly affect them.
I believe the Assessor’s Office should prioritize clear communication, user-friendly resources, and meaningful public education regarding property assessments and taxation. Information should be presented in a manner that is understandable to the average resident, not only to those with specialized experience or familiarity with government systems.
An informed public is better equipped to ask questions, exercise their rights, and meaningfully participate in the assessment process. By improving access to information and making government processes easier to understand, we can empower taxpayers, improve public confidence, and foster greater trust between residents and the Assessor’s Office.
Government serves the public best when information is not merely available, but genuinely accessible, understandable, and useful to the people it is intended to serve.
Fair & Consistent Property Assessments
Property owners deserve confidence that assessments are being applied fairly, consistently, and in a manner that inspires public trust. Because assessed values directly influence how the property tax burden is distributed, even the perception of significant disparities can undermine confidence in the entire system.
I believe a property assessment system should continually evaluate whether its methodologies are producing fair and understandable outcomes across different property types and communities. Similar properties should be assessed using consistent standards, and taxpayers should be able to understand how valuations are determined and why differences may exist.
Government should be judged by results, not intentions. If a system is producing outcomes that residents do not understand or perceive as equitable, we have a responsibility to acknowledge those concerns, examine the underlying causes, and pursue meaningful improvements. Public trust is built when government demonstrates a willingness to continually evaluate its practices, openly address concerns, and strive for fairness in both process and outcome.
Meaningful Due Process
Due process is more than simply providing a right to appeal. It requires that taxpayers have access to understandable information, reasonable timelines, meaningful opportunities to present evidence, and confidence that their concerns will be fairly considered.
Through my own experiences with property tax appeals and researching the assessment process, I have seen firsthand how complex and intimidating the system can be for ordinary residents. Many property owners feel that they are placed at an immediate disadvantage, where assessments are presumed correct from the outset and the burden rests almost entirely on the taxpayer to challenge conclusions that can be difficult to fully understand or independently verify.
I believe taxpayers deserve a process that is accessible, understandable, and genuinely open to evaluating all relevant evidence. Evidentiary standards should be logical, consistently applied, and designed to seek accurate outcomes rather than create unnecessary barriers for residents attempting to exercise their rights.
Public confidence in any assessment system depends not only on the accuracy of valuations, but also on whether taxpayers believe they are being heard, treated fairly, and given a meaningful opportunity to question decisions that directly affect their financial well-being. An effective appeals process should encourage transparency, fairness, and trust—not leave residents feeling that the outcome was predetermined before their concerns were ever considered.
